Speaker Pelosi’s Government-Run Health Plan Will Require a Monthly Abortion Premium
Posted by GOP Leader Press Office on November 5th, 2009

Health care reform should not be used as an opportunity to use federal funds to pay for elective abortions. Health reform should be an opportunity to protect human life - not end it.

Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi’s 2,032-page government takeover of health care does just that. On line 17, p. 110, section 222 under “Abortions for which Public Funding is Allowed” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run plan. The Speaker’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions.
What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan. It’s right there on line 16, page 96, section 213, under “Insurance Rating Rules.” The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account - and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services.

Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run plan. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.

A majority of Americans believe that health care plans should not be mandated to provide elective abortion coverage, and a majority of Americans do not believe government health care plans should include abortion coverage. Currently, federal appropriations bills include language known as the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, while another provision, known as the Smith Amendment, prohibits federal funding of abortion under the federal employees’ health benefits plan.
Speaker Pelosi’s 2,032-page health care monstrosity is an affront to the American people and drastically moves away from current policy. The American people deserve more from their government than being forced to pay for abortion.

House Republicans are offering a common-sense, responsible solution that would reduce health care costs and expand access while protecting the dignity of all human life. The Republican plan, available at HealthCare.GOP.gov, would codify the Hyde Amendment and prohibit all authorized and appropriated federal funds from being used to pay for abortion. And under the Republican plan, any health plan that includes abortion coverage may not receive federal funds.

Islander I know that you are not familuer with American law so before you say any more about govt. run health care here in the US I strongly suggest that you look up and digest the Hyde Amendment, which is still in effect and bans the use of tax payer money to pay for abrotion. I don't know nor do I care what the law is in Canada or any of the other countries that have socialized medicine. When congress repeals the law then fine but it has not been repaeled there for Peloisi is breaking established law, and bending the Constitution to suit herself.

America has become too divided for its own good it would seem.

Frank,

Your posting shows that the Republican Party wants to impose Christian fundamentalism theology upon people who don't follow fundamentalist viewpoint. It has a dangerous theocracy bent. We once had a debate here about the abortion issue and in Judaism a embryo/fetus is not judged have status of a human being at conception. Christians who want to take that viewpoint that at conception an embryo should be treated the same a living person, are free to do it, as long as they don't use the law to impose that viewpoint upon others.

Your are wrong afain as usaul Elaine for a holder of a PHD dergree you come up with some off the wall unedcated things at times. Haver you ever heard of the Hyde Amendment? That was passed years ago and is stil the law of the land? If you have never heard of that I strongly suggest that you look it up so you will be familuer with it before you start off with your anti-christian staements. Whe that debate you refer to was underway it did not include govt. tax monet paying fot abortions. I don't really care what your belief is on what stage an embryo is considered a human lief. We are talking here about the liberal dems in congress ignoreing the law of the land. Which has nothing to do with anyone's vales. And if you would just once get out of the classroom and see what some of your liberals are saying about this you may have a better understanding, check out Liberman from Cy. last week, also have a look at my post and the Dems breaking ranks. It may give you some insight.

Elaine I forgot to add that this bill as writen will force all those who to take this govt. ins. to pay directly to the tresuary a portion of their preium to fund abortion regardless what they may think about it. read it again it is clear that you did not read the entire article "Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run plan. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month." So as you see it is the liberals that are imposing their values on the country through the law.

Yet Torah imposes a punishment against those who kill a baby, embryo, fetus while it is still in the womb. Hey here is an idea. A child cannot support itself of make for its own survival until it is 4 or 5 years old. Let's allow the abortion of all children until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Furthermore maybe we should also force abortions on those that do not make $40,000 a year, because these children will become a burden on the tax payer.

John,

I am happen to be taking an online course in the Talmud,

The punishment for manslaughter in the Talmud is exile from city of residence. Payment of monetary fine for murder/manslaughter of a human is totally forbidden in Judaism, while it is a Muslim custom.. The punishment for causing a miscarriage is a monetary fine It is a civil crime, and is not judged as a criminal act unless i the the instrument which produced the miscarriage also causes the death of the woman. The Babylonian Talmud Yevamot 69b states that: the embryo is considered to be mere water until the fortieth day. Afterwards, it is considered subhuman until it is born. (Namely, it is a living being, but not yet a human being.) Hullin 55a; Gittin 23b describes the fetus as "part of the mother" Abortion is allowed if the continuation of the pregnancy endangers the woman's health.

By the way, abortion under the national health program is legal for preserving a woman's health.

I am not responding to the rest of your post because I think you are being ironic..

Elaine you still have not responded to the Hyde amendment, and we are not talking about abortion to save a mother or for real health reasons. This part of the health is for abortion on demand. Pleas stay on topic and addres the HYde Amendment and the fact that everyone that takes out the govt. ins has to pay into the abortion fund. Don't cloud the facts with left wing rhetoric.

Frank,

What the right considers as "abortion on demand", for others is abortion for the sake of a woman's mental or physical health. I consider the Hyde amendment as a violating the First Amendment against establishing a state religion. Hopefully when the Supreme Court has less ultra conservative judges, the Hyde amendment can be challenged and ruled as unconstitutional.

Oh I guess I missed the boat, Im sorry I did not realize that you Elaine had the final word on the laws of the land Im sorry for that. I must have been absent that day in Civics that spelled it out. My friend just because you do not agree with it does not change the fact that the United Stsates Congress pass it into and and the president signed it, and the Surme Court has not to date ruled as uncontitutional so until it is over turned it stands as the law and tax payer money can not be used for on demand abortion. And it does not matter if you agree or not.

Reading my first post, I need to edit a sentence.

By the way, abortion under Israel's national health program is legal for preserving a woman's mental or physical health.
